Letting Go of Bad Clients: Why Firing One Can Be an Act of Self-Respect

Blog by Dawn Maloney

I recently had to fire a client. It wasn’t the first time I’ve had to remove a toxic person from my life, but this one hit differently. There were red flags. Incidents. That uncomfortable feeling in my gut that kept whispering this isn’t right. And yet, like many of us do, I tried to make it work—until I couldn’t anymore.

What makes firing a client so hard is money.

Let’s be honest: money matters. Sometimes you want it. Sometimes you need it. And that’s where the fear creeps in. You tell yourself it’s not that bad. You give one more chance. Then another.

But money doesn’t make a great client.

Believe me—I know what perseverance looks like. As a survivor of domestic violence, I am living proof that you can endure, rebuild, and come out stronger on the other side. Better things are coming your way—both in life and in business. Including clients who respect you, your staff, your boundaries, and your work.

Firing a client is never easy. It’s awkward. It’s uncomfortable. You doubt yourself. You replay conversations in your head and wonder if you overreacted. You think, Maybe just one more chance.

But here’s the hard truth: how many chances do you give an abusive person? Only you can decide—but your peace has to matter.

My Best Advice for Saying Goodbye to a Client

  • Stay calm. Don’t make the decision in the heat of emotion. Let the initial wave pass so you can speak clearly and confidently.

  • Create distance. If possible, have someone else deliver the message. This reinforces that you are the authority and that the decision is final.

  • Stand your ground. Be kind, but firm. No over-explaining. No backtracking.

  • Don’t break. Expect pushback. Expect manipulation. Think of it like dealing with a child having a tantrum—calm, steady, unmoved.

And remember this: hurt people hurt people. That doesn’t mean you have to accept the damage they cause.

With the new year around the corner, let this be a season of release. Purge the toxic. Make room for the new. The right clients—the ones who value you—are out there.

Sometimes, letting go isn’t a failure.

It’s growth.
