Makeup is all about enhancing our natural beauty - not concealing it - and working with our skin - not against it. As we age, our skin changes (fine lines, wrinkles, drier and less elastic). But that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy flawless makeup! In this blog, we will dive into tips and techniques in enhancing our natural beauty and achieving a perfect look that flatters mature skin.
Hydrating primer is everything - Mature makeup starts with a skin prep. Never ever skip primer. A hydrating primer helps create a smooth base, blur pores, improve longevity and prevent foundation settling. Look for products with hyaluronic acid or glycerin that reduces the appearance of fine lines. Avoid overly mattifying primers as they can emphasize dryness.
Choose the right foundation - Go for lightweight foundations that offer a dewy finish. Apply using a soft brush with light motions or a damp sponge for seamless blending and natural look. Avoid heavy, full-coverage matte foundations that can settle into fine lines. Use less products and spot-conceal instead of layering a thick foundation.
Brighten the under-eye area - Use creamy, light concealer to brighten dark circles under eyes. Avoid thick, cakey concealers as they can crease and emphasize texture.
Enhance your brows - Well-groomed brows frame our face beautifully. Use a brow pencil or powder to fill sparse areas with light strokes. Avoid overly dark brows, as they can look harsh.
Play up the eyes - Use neutral or soft matte shades to define the eyes. Placement matters - apply a lighter shade on the lid and a medium tone in the crease to add dimension then blend upward and outward. Use a thin line of waterproof eyeliner to define the eyes without overpowering it. Finish with a lengthening mascara to curl and thicken lashes without clumping them.
Add color to the cheeks - Choose cream or powder blush in soft, natural shades. Instead of applying blush directly on the apples of the cheeks, apply it slightly higher on the cheekbones and blend upward for a lift effect.
Define the lips - Our lips lose volume and definition over time. Use a soft lip scrub to exfoliate gently. Choose a natural tone for lip liner and slightly overline your lip then blend inward. Go for creamy lipsticks or hydrating lipglosses that fit your skin tone. Lighter or mid-tone shades tend to make lips look fuller.
Set and refresh - Use a small, fluffy brush and lightly set your makeup using a translucent powder on the T-zone and under eyes. If you have dry skin, you may skip the powder. Follow with a hydrating setting spray to finish your look.
The secret to mature makeup is that less is more - lighter layers, softer edges, radiant finishes. As our skin changes, our techniques and products can evolve as well. The goal isn’t to look younger but to look confident and like the best version of ourselves. When we follow these techniques, makeup highlights our features and our mature skin can absolutely shine.
