Attending the NJ Film and Television Expo was an incredible opportunity to connect with industry professionals, fellow creatives, and aspiring talent. As a makeup artist, networking is just as important as skill—and this event reinforced a few key lessons I want to share with anyone looking to grow in the beauty and entertainment industries.
1. Maintain a Positive Attitude—No Matter What: Unexpected things happen. I actually lost my phone during the event, and while I was panicking inside, I stayed calm and professional on the outside. That mindset matters. I’m so glad I kept my composure and professional attitude. People remember how you make them feel, and a positive attitude leaves a lasting impression. I’m proud to say that people witnessed my good behavior during a stressful moment.
2. Come Prepared with the Right Tools: Bring a bag to carry your marketing materials—business cards, portfolios, or product samples. Also pack a pen and small notebook to jot down important details. Staying organized shows professionalism.
3. Be Approachable and Presentable: First impressions count. Good hygiene, fresh breath, and clean hands go a long way—especially in crowded environments where handshakes (and even hugs) are common. Make people feel comfortable interacting with you.
4. Stay Energized: Networking events can be long and exhausting. Bring water and snacks so you can stay focused, alert, and ready to engage throughout the day.
5. Capture the Moment: Take photos and videos. These events are perfect for building your brand on social media and showcasing your involvement in the industry. I reconnected with several colleagues and I’m so happy that I was able to capture the moment!
6. Always Follow Up: Connecting is just the first step. Follow up with emails or calls to build real relationships. Not every contact will be relevant, but the right one can change your career.
Networking takes effort and time—but done right, it’s absolutely worth it.
