If you’ve been on social media lately, you’ve probably noticed it too. 2016 makeup throwback photos are everywhere, and honestly? They’ve been so much fun to look at.
That era of makeup was loud, creative, and fearless. We weren’t afraid of a full face of makeup, and everyone had their own version of glam. It makes you stop and ask… when did makeup change so much?
The Era of Cut Creases & Bold Choices
2016 was the time of:
Sharp, dramatic winged liner
Perfectly carved cut creases
Glitter lids that could be seen from across the room
Bold lips in reds, berries, and deep mattes
Full glam that took time—and we loved every minute of it
Makeup wasn’t about “barely there.” It was about expression. You could spot a look and instantly know who created it.
So… When Did Everyone Start Looking the Same?
Somewhere along the way, trends shifted. Makeup became softer, more neutral, more “clean.” While that look is beautiful in its own way, it also brought something else with it, uniformity.
The techniques changed. The colors softened. The individuality blurred. Suddenly, it felt like every face followed the same formula.
And don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with modern makeup trends. But there was something special about a time when artists weren’t afraid to go bold, dramatic, or over-the-top.
Missing the Artistry
What I miss most about 2016 makeup is the creativity. The willingness to try something different. The excitement of sitting down to do makeup just to experiment, not to fit into a trend.
Those looks took skill, patience, and confidence. They told a story. They made statements.
Maybe It’s Time for a Comeback
Looking back reminds us that makeup is art, it doesn’t have to be subtle to be beautiful. Whether you love a soft glow or a full glam moment, there’s room for all of it.
Maybe the real takeaway from these throwbacks is this: Makeup should be fun. Makeup should be personal. Makeup should feel like you.
And who knows… maybe it’s time to bring back a little glitter, a sharp wing, and a bold lip, just because we can.
