Prepping your skin is essential for applying your foundation. Like preparing a canvas for a painting, your skin needs to be cleansed and prepped for the products you will use to achieve your makeup looks. Unfortunately, cakey skin is not in style, but we have the essential skin care tips and tricks to reach a flawless, dewy base for your foundation and makeup products. Follow these steps to create the perfect base for your makeup.
Cleanse
First, let's work with a clean base. Cleansing the skin helps get rid of any dirt or makeup on the skin and prevents breakouts from makeup use. We recommend using a gentle cleanser with parabens and artificial fragrances for the first step of your skin care regimen. Next, use lukewarm water with your cleanser and wash your neck and face in circular, upward motions. Cleansing helps smooth the skin and even the skin tone – all in all, an important first step before applying your foundation.
Exfoliate
After cleansing, it's time to remove dead skin cells and further smooth the skin by exfoliating it. First, you need to exfoliate to prevent the foundation from caking on the skin. We recommend an exfoliator with a tiny, circular granular. Larger granules in exfoliators can tear the skin and cause irritation– we definitely do not need that when applying makeup.
When exfoliating, gently rub the product in circular motions going up the face. We also encourage you to exfoliate the neck to help cleanse the pores. Finally, rinse in warm water so the foundation doesn't thicken on the skin when applied.
Tone and use a serum
Use a toner to get rid of excess oil. Toners are a great foundation base; removing oils will prevent your skin from looking sweaty. After toning, apply a serum on the face to help give it some moisture. We recommend using a rejuvenating serum with Vitamin C to help smooth the skin.
Smooth the undereye area
The next step before moisturizing is to apply eye cream to the undereye to even the skin tone under the eye and smooth the skin. We recommend this step to easily blend your concealer and foundation under the eyes. The skin in this area is also very thin so try to apply eye cream at least once a day to help keep the skin's elasticity and youthfulness.
Moisturize
Next is to add a layer of moisture before applying your foundation. A light moisturizer is a perfect base for foundation because it's less oily and easily blends into the skin. Try pressing the moisturizer into the skin with a beauty blender or sponge instead of rubbing the moisturizer. Patting and pressing the moisturizer helps the skin absorb it faster and keep the moisture in the skin.
Prime Time!
The final step is to fill in any lines or creasing that could affect the flawless finish of your skin by priming the skin. You can also use a tinted primer to color correct the skin before applying foundation. Like a moisturizer, apply the primer by patting it into the skin instead of rubbing it. Toners with a silicone base are perfect for smoothing lines on the skin. Our foundation primer is an excellent product that smooths fine lines and preps the skin for full glam makeup looks. It also contains soothing and all natural ingredients such as vitamin E and A oils that provides the skin a perfect balance of moisture.
