The USA enacted Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act in 2022 (MoCRA)
Expanding FDA’s (Food and Drug Administration) authority over cosmetics industry. This is the largest reform of cosmetic regulations in the US in 84 years!
There are extensive new regulations for companies manufacturing and distributing cosmetics in the USA. The FDA requirements must be met by Dec 29th 2023:
FDA requires facilities that participate in the manufacturing or processing of cosmetics to be registered.
FDA requires for cosmetic products, the manufacturer, packer, or distributor whose name appears on the label to submit a cosmetic product listing.
A responsible person is required to report serious adverse events associated with the use of cosmetic products in the US to FDA.
Any distribution of of misbranded cosmetic products with false or misleading labeling claims, labels with missing information, or containers made or filled in a deceptive manner is prohibited.
Allergen labeling is also now required and declaration of fragrance allergens.
I think these changes are fantastic. We can now be more confident in the products we buy. More recently makeup brands have been shifting towards clean makeup. This is not a fad that will come and go. People are finally caring a lot more about what they’re putting on their skin. And why shouldn’t we? The skin is the largest organ that serves to protect the body. Our skin absorbs what we put on it. So it’s about time for stricter regulations on ingredients and manufacturing practices.
